August's Two-day Painting Workshop:canyon

Oil Painting Expressively with Palette Knives

August 29-30 (Friday & Saturday), 2014, 10:00 to 12:30, (one hour lunch), 1:30 to 5:00PM

Description: A workshop to learn techniques to oil paint impressionistically with accomplished Arizona landscape artist Russell Johnson during a two-day workshop.

The goal of this workshop is to portray a visual experience of nature focusing on how it felt to witness its splendor.

This will be done through simplification of a composition, seeing value of colors appropriately, using color expressively, and applying paint texturally. Russell paints almost primarily with a palette knife, enjoying the sculptural qualities it produces. The student will learn palette knife painting techniques to energetically represent the natural landscape. The two day workshop will consist of sketching from photographs, color mixing, setting up the painting, and finally, completing the painting.

Learning Objectives:

Acrylic Workshop – The Medium is the Message

Have you ever wondered how to bring natural elements and mixed media together with acrylic painting and color?

This workshop will focus on the many Golden mediums available to artists.  Working with these media, the workshop will bring fibers, paper, sand, powders and various inks, paint, drawing and mark making tools into the acrylic painting media.  Exploring inks, paint and media together, this workshop is an exploration of media and technique.  Participants are encouraged to explore media as message.  Artists will bring their own images and ideas to the workshop and infuse these with the wild world of Golden media available to them.

Working from the intuitive side of our creativity, this workshop will explore Golden Acrylic Media and a host of mixed media inclusions.  Participants will:

  1. learn how to stain and include paper as a rich colorful layer in more complex work.
  2. learn how to include dirt, leaves, metals, pictures and a host of things in paintings.
  3. develop layers within an acrylic work with different media like charcoal, ink, and pencil.
  4. understand the variety of Golden Media and how it can be used in a mixed media work.
